Your Branches



We recently visited De Leon Springs state park in Florida. It was a beautiful setting with a natural spring and many huge old trees filled with moss. It was relaxing to take a walk through the trees, see the wild azaleas in bloom, and just sit on a bench and soak in the sunshine.

Unfortunately, you weren’t in Florida with me, but hopefully you can relate by the picture of the trees covered with moss. How are your branches? Do you feel as if they are bending down under a heavy load of moss?

Before I left Ohio, I felt like the tree in the picture. My branches were bending under a heavy load. Nothing specific, just everyday life and busyness. Fortunately, some R&R and sunshine has restored my body and I feel like some of the moss has been removed. Thankfully the Son-shine has also renewed my soul this past week.

We can either prune our branches or God will do it for us! What I mean is, where are your priorities. Is Jesus part of your day-to-day routine? We can either slow down our lives and walk with Him, or He will slow us down in ways we may not appreciate or understand when it happens.


He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. (John 15:2).


My vacation was an opportunity to slow down and trim my own branches, so to speak. I took time to read a great Christian book which boosted my faith. I did a little proofreading of my own devotionals. I slowed my thoughts to include Jesus on future life and publishing decisions. All of these are ways in which I pruned my own branches. I chose to cut my own branches rather than forging ahead blind and crazy, before Jesus trimmed my branches.

Life is busy and it is easy to get buried under a load of moss just like the limbs on the trees. That leaves us with two options:


  • Keep piling on the moss until we go crazy and Jesus trims our branches.
  • Slow down our crazy lives and remember Jesus words, “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” (John 15:7).


Don’t go Blooming Crazy before you unload the moss from your branches, instead find peace and rest with Jesus. Take time to bask in the Son-shine daily and renew your soul!

Sometimes life gets crazy messy, like my house while we were waiting on new flooring. We ordered vinyl flooring for the office and carpet for the bedroom. They estimated it would be about three weeks before it arrived. I saw no hurry to empty either room and paint. After all, I had plenty of time. My three weeks turned into about ten days, and I had very little notice they were coming to install the office flooring. The Missing Sock

  I dropped a laundry basket of clean clothes near my husband’s chair. I knew it was a long shot, but I thought maybe he would notice the basket and match socks while he watched the TV. (Try it sometime, because it worked!) When he got to the end of the basket, he was missing a sock. No big deal, it happens all the time. I set the sock on top of the dresser and figured its friend would show up in another load. Fast forward several days and I’m at the chiropractor standing at the front desk. I removed my jacket and took a step backward. Much to my surprise, there was my husband’s missing sock on the floor. The sweatshirt I was wearing was in the same load of laundry. Apparently the missing sock found a new friend and became rather clingy. I picked it up off of the floor, chuckled and said, “I found my husband’s missing sock. I write devotions. Have Faith and Pray

  Faith is an element in my life, which I have questioned from time to time. What exactly is faith? Hebrews 11:1 (NIV) says “F aith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” If I pray for something in faith and it doesn’t happen, is that a lack of faith? I have come to realize over the years that it is not. We need to understand and be thankful that God sometimes says, “No.” I grew up in a godly home where examples of faith surrounded me. On the family farm, there was a great deal of work, but there were also lessons of faith. I watched year after year as my father planted the seed and had faith it would grow. The seed needed to receive the right amount of rain, sunshine, and nutrients to produce a crop, which provided food for his dairy cattle and an income for his family.
